Argya_Lydon Anyone who knows FBA for his previous releases is likely to get really surprised by this one. With the exception of Black Acid (previously released), the tracks are an immersive journey into peaceful landscapes and seascapes, with long, sustained organs and strings guiding us through this trip. It's a chill out experience you won't expect from a Detroit techno pioneer as FBA is, but the wow effect is followed by a really enjoyable time. Favorite track: Beginner's Mind.

Almost 10 years after his last solo album, Matthew Puffett aka Future Beat Alliance makes a long-overdue return with new album Beginner's Mind. The deeply immersive nine-track album lands on 10th July 2020, The record is an invitation to "slow down, think mindfully and see more clearly" and that is embodied by lead single 'Birth', which is just over four & a half minutes of expansive, horizontal dub with thoughtful keys and chords wistfully drifting high up in the clouds, ‘Birth' also comes complete with a full length visual created by the elusive shadow rabbit.

Over the course of a career that started in 1996, Matthew Puffett has taken great inspiration from Detroit futurism, mixed it up with his own UK perspective and become synonymous with soulful techno and electro that gazes off into the cosmos. His always emotive, melodic sounds have made for electrifying EPs and absorbing long players on esteemed labels like Tresor, Delsin, Versatile & Rush Hour, as well as self-releasing on his own Reward System imprint.

The last 10 years have seen Puffett working closely & collaborating on James Lavelle's UNKLE project. The resulting body of work includes co-writing and programming UNKLE`s 5th studio album, `The Road Part 1’, various film projects and advertising campaigns, and remixing a list of high profile artists. During this period UNKLE were winners of the MPG Remixer Of The Year award in 2016, 2018 & 2020. In the background, Matthew continued to make his own music and always looked to grow, evolve and infuse his sounds with new techniques and understanding. It was a collection of this music that eventually got crafted and shaped into new album Beginner's Mind, which comes just after a new 12" for R&S which hit the shelves on 13th March & features a remix from Afriqua.

"The title is the blueprint zen meditation technique," says Puffett. "It invites participants to try to forget everything they know - or think they know - about a subject and view it as if completely fresh, every time, with no expertise, experience or opinions. It was a subject I became quite interested in and was the perfect title to front this new body of work."

The lush 'Window to the World' opens in mellifluous fashion, with layers of gorgeous melodies emptying your mind from the off. 'Birth' is a more propulsive track with spacious, dubby, broken beats underneath smeared synths that stretch to the distant horizon, and 'Black Acid' is built on an elastic bassline with heavenly chords up top. 'Tell Me About These Dreams' is an ambient track of pure beauty and 'Time Stamp' layers up long legged drums with sparkling chords and lazy bass tumbles to lush effect

The story continues as 'Anti Clockwise' awakens you with a more prickly groove and taught synth sequences. That energy continues through the unbalanced loops and rising tension of 'Broken Wheels (In 7/8)' then 'Looping Therapy' is healing and harmonic ambient of the highest order. Things end on the uplifting and optimistic title track with its glowing synths and pure sense of spirit leaving you feeling utterly cleansed.

Beginner's Mind, Puffett`s most cohesive record to date, is a soothing, escapist listen in these uncertain times & will slow the minds and swell the hearts of all who hear it.
